3 things I learnt (Nov. 30)

skyelarlee

Have you ever been abroad and learnt something about your home country that you hadn't heard before? This week an international cookbook was pulled out in a chat, and it was fun to cross check it with those abroad!

1. I learnt that 'boxty' (a potato pancake) is identified as an Irish food in the international foods cookbook, yet in Ireland it isn't so common. It reminded me of when I was in New Zealand and discovered 'Canadian bacon' for the first time. It is back bacon, and nothing like the bacon that is typically served in Canada!

2. This might not be as interesting to you as it is to me, but Cariboo have really large feet and two dew claws - one on each side of the foot (most animals have one on the inside of their leg). This is to allow them to 'float' over the snow as if they were on snowshoes, and to grip uneven ground. Perhaps I've just been spending too much time looking at the deer tracks in my neighborhood!

3. Did you know that most of the time when a solar eclipse is experienced, it is only a partial one? For the next solar eclipse, there is a 90 km strip of land that crosses Chile and Argentina where it can be experienced in full on December 14, 2020. But for the rest of South America, and a few countries in southwest Africa, only a partial eclipse will be visible at this time. Solar eclipse guide 2020: When, where & how to see them, by Hanneke Weitering on www.space.com (May 02, 2020) has a complete article on solar eclipses if you're curious to know more!

'Till next week!
