3 things I learnt (Feb. 1)

skyelarlee

It’s been another week of great conversations and random learning points!

1. When I think of dogs in the Arctic, I always assumed that the Siberian Huskies were the northern dog. But this week I learnt that Canada too has it's own breed of northern dog - the Canadian Eskimo dog, which is different to the American Eskimo dog. These dogs are very much working dogs, being used in dogsledding and hunting. And are super cute, of course!

2. Japan has sand dunes! The Tottori Sand Dunes exist in the Tottori Prefecture, on 16 km of coastline. You can even take a camel ride there! Upon a bit more research, I'm learning that sand dunes exist in far more countries than I had originally thought - here is a list of the most breathtaking sand dunes around the world, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. 3. One of my favorite books as a kid was Dear As Salt, by Rafe Martin. And this week we started talking about salt. Rather than talking about how important it is in cooking (like the book refers to), we learnt about Himalayan Black Salt, which is often used in vegan cooking to add an egg flavour. If you're curious about all the different types of salt (there are more than just a few!), here is a comprehensive list.

‘til next week!
